`lorem ipsum dolor’ What does that mean?

Folk who enter to the magical world of web design and development, come across lot of daily questions and various new technologies. As a beginner, i had many questions regarding the SEO (Search Engine Optimization), CMS (Content Management System), CSS(Cascading Style Sheet) etc., thankfully team here at Kinex Media helped me out with all of them during my training period, except one.. what does ‘lorem ipsum dolor’ means?

For those, who don’t belong to the field and don’t know what I am talking about, “lorem ipsum” refers to a Latin text Block that people use as a placeholder to denote where text content will be. Though it is widely used, no one could tell me why it was used or what it even remotely meant.

So after all curiosity, I went digging. I learnt, lorem ipsum actually has a long and distinguished history in both literature and the printing industry. In Mid. 1500s, an unknown printer took this block of text and began using it as a placeholder as it provided a good range of spacing and individual letters to give a perfect preview of actual content. Bizarrely, this chunk of letter has lasted over 500 years.

However, even more interesting is the literary history of the phrase. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, traced the passage to The Extremes of Good and Evil a treatise on the theory of ethics written by Cicero in 45 BC (yep, over 2000 years ago). Translated, the first line of the passage reads, “There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain…”
