The world of tech was jolted on November 17, 2023 when OpenAI’s board removed Sam Altman as their CEO.

Sam has brought a revolution in the field of artificial intelligence by being the brain behind pioneering products like ChatGPT and DALL-E. So, it was natural that there was a huge uproar from not only the non-profit’s employees and investors but the general public as well.

So, let’s explore what is the impact of this big development in the artificial intelligence and technology world!

The Aftermath of OpenAI’s Board’s decision.

Greg Brockman(President and co-founder of OpenAI) said that he is quitting the company, which he created along with Sam in his apartment. Along with this, over 500 OpenAI employees have threatened to quit the company and join Microsoft in case the board directors don’t resign from their positions. In fact, the chaos that has unfolded has led the experts to say that OpenAI is pretty much done if the board can’t clean up the mess that they have created.

To do some damage control, the AI giant’s board appointed Mira Murati as the new Interim CEO who was earlier the Chief Technology Officer(CTO). Before she could even begin, Mira was replaced by the former Twich CEO Emmett Shear as the interim CEO.

The board’s decisions have also jeopardised the $90 billion initial public offering(IPO) plan that the company had, which is a huge financial loss!

Sam Altman joins Microsoft!

In an interesting turn of events, Sam Altman was appointed by Microsoft, who owns 49% of OpenAI. Moreover, Microsoft announced that they are also hiring Greg Brockman and their colleagues to head a new advanced AI research team.

Satya Nadella(the CEO of Microsoft) confirmed on X that Sam will be heading the new team as its CEO. If such big AI tech giants like Sam and Greg have joined Microsoft, then they must have big plans for them. Who knows, which futuristic AI products Microsoft is building and the tech services they will provide in the coming days with their help?

So, we can say that OpenAI’s self-inflicted loss caused by the misjudged decision of its board has been the biggest gain for Microsoft in this saga.

What does this mean for the world of technology and artificial intelligence?

Microsoft was quickly catching up to the search giant Google with its own search engine, Bing, and was even surpassing Google’s abilities in some instances. However, with Sam joining Microsoft, they may gain an edge over Google with his help in improving Microsoft’s search products.

Furthermore, Microsoft also provides a lot of AI products and services, which can get a boost because of the expertise brought by Sam and his team. So, we can say that Microsoft has a real chance to become the AI and tech leader because of the wonderful move that they have made.

Final Thoughts

What looked like a nightmare in the tech and AI world has turned out to be a beautiful dream with Sam Altman joining Microsoft. The only winner in this unexpected scenario is Microsoft.

It’s because Microsoft has a significant stake in OpenAI and now also has the brains behind its inception and great products leading their new AI group. So, good times are ahead for Sam Altman and Microsoft, but not so for OpenAI.
